Family & Couples

Photos that look like you.

These sessions are built for real life. Muddy knees, toddler meltdowns, the dog photobombing every other shot. We pick somewhere that means something to you, and I always build in proper time so nobody feels rushed. Everyone settles, the camera disappears, and that's when the good ones happen.

No stiff line-ups unless you want them. If someone has a meltdown, we have a snack and carry on. The mess is half the point.

Just the two of you works the same way. Couples, engagements, an anniversary, or no occasion at all: we go for a walk somewhere you like and I stay out of the way. Here’s Best and Rory’s afternoon in central London, if you want to see how one of those goes.

Stuck on where to go or what to wear? I've written guides to the best photo spots around Caterham and what to wear for a family photoshoot.

How it works

We start with a chat.

First, a quick planning call. We talk through where we might go, who's coming along and anything you're hoping for. Maybe you've got a spot in mind. Maybe you'd rather we just see what happens.

Then we spend proper time together on the day, and you come away with the whole story of it, finished in my style and yours to keep.

★★★★★

We did a family photoshoot in our garden with Elena and she did such a wonderful job. The pictures feel really natural and timeless, and she put us all at ease and made it fun.

Good to know

Questions families ask.

The little things worth knowing before your session.

What if my kids won't sit still?

Good. Moving kids make better photos than stiff ones. I work at kid pace, which means we follow them, not the other way around. If someone has a meltdown we stop, regroup, carry on. The mess is kind of the point.

What should we wear for a family photoshoot?

Wear what feels like you, just a notch up from everyday. Soft, warm tones and natural fabrics photograph beautifully, and I'd gently steer you away from big logos or tiny busy patterns, which pull the eye. If you're coordinating a family, pick two or three colours that sit well together rather than matching head to toe. And dress for the weather, because cold, grumpy kids make for cold, grumpy photos. I'm happy to send a few ideas before the day.

We're a bit awkward in front of the camera. Will you help us pose?

Almost everyone says this, and almost everyone forgets about it ten minutes in. You won't be stood stiffly facing the lens. I give gentle prompts and little things to do, like walk this way or whisper something daft to each other, so you're busy being yourselves rather than posing. The natural moments in between tend to be the keepers. You don't need to be photogenic. That's my job.

When's the best time of day for a shoot?

For outdoor sessions, the first hour after sunrise or the couple of hours before sunset give you that soft, golden light everyone loves. With little ones I'll always work around naps and mealtimes first, because a happy toddler beats perfect light every time. Either way, we'll settle the timing together on the planning call.

Can we bring the dog?

Yes, always. Dogs are family, and some of my favourite shots have a wagging tail in them. Bring a lead and some treats, and ideally a second person who can hold them for the odd photo where they're not invited. We'll make it work.

What happens if it rains?

For outdoor sessions, we reschedule at no charge. A bit of cloud cover makes for better light, and it's only heavy rain that's a problem. We'll keep an eye on the forecast together and make the call with a couple of days' notice.
