I'm a Caterham-based photographer, and people ask me this all the time: where's a good spot for photos near here? So here's my list. These are the places I keep coming back to for family sessions, couples and portraits, with a note on who each one suits and when the light is at its best.
Queen's Park, Caterham
Right in the middle of town, Queen's Park is my easy answer for families who'd rather not travel. Open grass, mature trees and room for kids to run off some energy before we start. It works all year, and because it's so central, nobody has to drive far with tired little ones in the back. Late afternoon, when the light drops low behind the trees, is when it really sings.

Happy Valley and Farthing Downs
A short drive north, above Coulsdon, this is open chalk downland with long grass, wildflowers through the summer and big open skies. It feels a world away from anywhere, and it's right on our doorstep. Golden hour up here is hard to beat. Wear proper shoes, because the paths get uneven, and the short walk in is worth it for the views.

Caterham sits right on the North Downs, and the viewpoints looking out across the valley make a beautiful backdrop for couples and older families. In the last hour before sunset the light catches the treeline and the fields below. These spots suit people who want a bit of drama in the frame rather than a neat, manicured park.
Kenley Common
Open grassland with a real sense of space, Kenley Common is another good one for families and their dogs. There's room to wander, a mix of open field and tree line, and it rarely feels crowded. It's a relaxed setting for a session where the children set the pace and we follow.
Godstone
Just down the hill, Godstone has a proper village green and a pretty pond that photograph beautifully, especially in spring and autumn. It's a gentle setting for couples, small families and anyone who likes a bit of English-village character in their pictures.
Titsey Place and Gardens
Over towards Oxted, Titsey is a historic estate with formal gardens and grand grounds. It's a special-occasion sort of spot. Worth knowing that estates like this usually ask you to check or book before a photo session, which I handle as part of the planning.
Reigate Hill and Priory Park
A short drive west, Reigate gives you two settings in one town. There's the viewpoint up on Reigate Hill along the North Downs, and the green, tree-lined calm of Priory Park down below. Between them you can catch open-sky drama and soft, leafy shade in the same afternoon.
Box Hill, if you fancy the drive
A little further out towards Dorking, Box Hill is the famous one, with sweeping views over the Surrey Hills. It gets busy at weekends, so an early start or a weekday works best. If you're after that proper rolling-hills backdrop, it earns the extra miles.
A few practical tips
Timing. For outdoor sessions I aim for the first hour after sunrise or the couple of hours before sunset. With young children, I plan around naps and mealtimes first. A happy toddler beats perfect light.
What to bring. Comfortable shoes, a snack for little ones and a layer each. Surrey weather changes its mind fast.
Permissions. Public parks and commons are generally fine for a family session. Managed estates and National Trust sites usually ask you to check or book, and I handle that before the day.
Weather. A bit of cloud is your friend. It softens the light and saves everyone from squinting into the sun.
