Reigate is fifteen minutes along the Downs from me and it has something most Surrey towns don't: a genuine choice of character for a small day. You can marry in a windmill that holds a couple of dozen people, or in a manor house ballroom, or outdoors beside a lake, all within about three miles of each other.
My work suits the smaller end of that. I photograph the day as it happens rather than staging it, which means you get the look on your mum's face during the reading, not forty minutes of everyone squinting into the sun in rows.

Reigate Heath Windmill was built around 1765 and stopped working by wind in 1862. In 1880 the roundhouse underneath it was turned into a chapel, dedicated to St Cross and made a chapel of ease to St Mary's in Reigate. It's thought to be the only consecrated windmill church anywhere, it's a listed building and it still holds services through the summer.
Weddings happen there too. It's small enough that the guest list writes itself, so talk to the parish early about dates and numbers. For me it's a room with low light, no space to stand back and nowhere to hide, which is where documentary photography earns its keep.

Travel within 30 miles is included, and Reigate is a short run along the North Downs from Caterham.
Reigate Manor on Reigate Hill is an 18th century manor house with several licensed rooms, from the Ballroom down to the Conservatory, which is the one to ask about if your numbers are modest. Reigate Hill Golf Club at Gatton Bottom sits in the Surrey Hills and can marry you indoors or outside by the lake, which is worth knowing if you'd rather say your vows under the sky.
Both hold well over a hundred guests, so they're built for the full day rather than a quiet one. Licences and capacities do change, so take the venue's word as current rather than mine. Marrying a few miles east instead? I've a separate page for weddings around Redhill.

For a photographer it is a wonderful problem: a small round room, low light and no space to hide, which is exactly the kind of day I like.

Both take well over 100 guests, so they suit the full day rather than an elopement. Check licences and numbers with the venue, since these change.
There is no register office in Reigate or Redhill. Surrey County Council runs its offices at Leatherhead, Guildford and Weybridge, and Leatherhead is the closest of those. Croydon is another option and is often quicker to reach from the east of the borough. You give notice where you live, then you can marry at any register office in England or Wales.
Elopements start at £750 for up to three and a half hours. The Intimate day is £1,250 for six to seven hours and up to 30 guests. The full Small Wedding day is £1,750, up to ten hours and up to 60 guests. I am based in Caterham, a short drive along the North Downs, and travel within 30 miles is included.
