Small Weddings & Elopements · Caterham

I live here, and I've photographed weddings here.

I'm a wedding photographer based in Caterham. I've shot a wedding inside St John the Evangelist in Caterham Valley, so I know how that church holds light on a grey afternoon and how good the stone doorway looks on the way back out. Being local means no travel supplement, no getting lost on the morning and a photographer who can walk your route beforehand if you'd like me to.

Most of the weddings I photograph are small. Thirty people in a room, sometimes ten, sometimes just the two of you and a couple of witnesses. That suits me. A short guest list buys you more time and more of the moments worth keeping, and nobody spends forty minutes being arranged into rows.

Where you can marry in Caterham

Church, hall or a short drive to the downs.

St John the Evangelist in Caterham Valley is the one I know from the inside, and the photograph here is from a wedding I shot there: stone arches, a stained glass window behind the altar and an arched doorway that photographs beautifully as you leave. Soper Hall on Harestone Valley Road has stood at the centre of town since 1911, and both its Memorial Hall and Conference Hall are licensed for civil ceremonies. Further out, Surrey National Golf Club at Chaldon and Woldingham Golf Club on Halliloo Valley Road hold licences too.

Thinking of a register office? Surrey runs its own at Leatherhead, Guildford and Weybridge, which is a long drive for something that takes twenty minutes. Croydon Register Office sits closer, just down the hill. You give notice where you live, then you can marry at any register office in England or Wales, so the choice is genuinely yours.

Common questions

Where can we get married in Caterham?

St John the Evangelist in Caterham Valley is the church I know best from the inside, with stone arches and a big stained glass window behind the altar. Soper Hall on Harestone Valley Road has been at the centre of town since 1911 and both its Memorial Hall and Conference Hall are licensed for civil ceremonies. A little further out, Surrey National Golf Club at Chaldon and Woldingham Golf Club on Halliloo Valley Road are licensed too. Do check current availability with the venue itself, because licences and rooms change.

Where is the nearest register office to Caterham?

Surrey County Council runs its register offices at Leatherhead, Guildford and Weybridge, all a fair drive from Caterham. Croydon Register Office at the Town Hall on Fell Road is closer, roughly twenty minutes down the hill. You give notice at the office for the district you live in, then you can marry at any register office in England or Wales, so a Caterham couple is free to book Croydon if it suits them better.

How much is a wedding photographer in Caterham?

Elopements start at £750 for up to three and a half hours, just the two of you. The Intimate day is £1,250 for six to seven hours and up to 30 guests. The full Small Wedding day is £1,750, up to ten hours and up to 60 guests. Travel within 30 miles is included, so Caterham costs you nothing extra.

We are only having a handful of guests. Is a photographer worth it?

More than ever, I would say. Some of the most moving days I have photographed had ten people in the room. A short guest list means more time with you and more of the real moments, because nobody is being marshalled into rows for a group shot they did not want. The size of the day has nothing to do with how much it is worth remembering.
