The one nobody has to drive two hours for.

Redhill is about fifteen minutes from me and it solves a problem most Surrey venues create. Direct trains from London and the coast, the M25 on the doorstep and Gatwick a short drive away, so the half of your guest list that has to travel isn't planning a two-hour cross-country trek for a three-hour lunch.

What it also has is Nutfield Priory, a Victorian country house hotel on the ridge above the town and one of the more interesting places in this part of Surrey to photograph a wedding.

Nutfield Priory, and rooms like it

Dark wood and stained glass, without the flash.

The name misleads people, so it's worth saying plainly: Nutfield Priory has never been a priory. It's a Victorian country house, now a hotel and spa. John Gibson built it between 1872 and 1874 for the MP Joshua Fielden, neo-Gothic modelled on the Palace of Westminster, Kentish ragstone outside with a six-storey tower over the entrance. The ceremony rooms are named after those two men, the Gibson Room and the Fielden Suite, which is handy to know when a coordinator starts listing options at you. It's licensed across several rooms and seats somewhere around 110.

What Gibson left behind is dark panelling, stained glass and windows built for grandeur rather than daylight. Those are the rooms couples worry about, and the worry is fair, because a photographer who answers dark panelling by firing a flash across it hands you back pictures of a room you don't recognise. I'd rather use the light that's there, keep its colour and let the shadows stay shadows. If your venue is on the gloomy side, say so when we talk and I'll tell you how I'd shoot it.

Smaller rooms, a few minutes out.

Robert Denholm House on Bletchingley Road at Nutfield holds up to 60 in its Capenor Room, which lands almost exactly on my full-day guest number. Bletchingley Golf Club on Church Lane is licensed as well and sits out in open country a few minutes east. Between them and the Priory you can have a Redhill wedding at more or less any size without leaving the RH1 postcode.

Where do people get married around Redhill?

Nutfield Priory is the best known. Our venue is dark and panelled. Will the photos be gloomy?

No, and this is worth saying because it is the most common worry at Nutfield Priory and rooms like it. Wood panelling, stained glass and small windows are lovely to be married in and unforgiving to photograph badly. I work with the light that is there rather than firing flash across the room, so the pictures keep the warmth and the shadow of the place instead of looking flat and washed out.

Is Redhill easy for guests to get to?

Easier than most of this area. Redhill has direct trains from London and the south coast, the M25 is minutes away and Gatwick is a short drive, which matters if anyone is flying in. If half your guest list is travelling, a Redhill venue takes a lot of the argument out of the planning.

How much is a wedding photographer in Redhill?

Elopements start at £750 for up to three and a half hours. The Intimate day is £1,250 for six to seven hours and up to 30 guests. The full Small Wedding day is £1,750, up to ten hours and up to 60 guests. I am based in Caterham, about fifteen minutes away, and travel within 30 miles is included.
